One tier wants to be your glasses. The other wants to be your computer.

The $2,195 Question
Fashion accessories or AR flagships? The market split in two.
Issue #1 · Published Oct 19, 2026
While Meta conquered the mainstream at $299, the other end of the market went full flagship. Snap's Specs — see-through AR glasses built on a multi-year Qualcomm Snapdragon XR deal struck in April 2026 — were priced around $2,195 for a late-2026 launch. Meta's own Display glasses, shipping in the US since September 2025 at $799 with a 600×600px built-in display and 12MP camera, sit in the middle. Two tiers emerged, and they're barely the same product.
Tier one: fashion/AI accessories, no display. Meta Glasses at $299. Ray-Ban Meta Audio at $349 — prescription-friendly, no camera, a direct answer to privacy anxiety. These look like glasses, act like an AI assistant, and cost like fashion. This tier won 2026.
Tier two: full AR display flagships. Snap Specs at $2,195. Meta Display at $799. Xreal's Project Aura with its 70-degree field of view. Even Realities' G2 sits between the tiers at $599: no camera, but a discreet micro-LED display, prescription-friendly, and a 2026 IFA Innovation Award winner. These overlay digital worlds onto your vision — genuinely futuristic, genuinely expensive, genuinely early. This tier is winning the headlines, not the sales.
So which one are you? That's the $2,195 question. The fashion tier asks: do you want glasses that are smarter? The AR tier asks: do you want to replace your phone? Different answers, different buyers, different futures. For now, the money — and the mainstream — sits firmly in tier one.
The smart play is to watch the gap between the tiers, because it won't stay this wide. Displays get smaller and cheaper every year; fashion gets bolder about absorbing tech. The $799 Meta Display is already the bridge product — a flagship wearing mainstream pricing. Where the tiers meet is where the next decade of eyewear gets decided.
